YokastaS Redux, 2005, LaMama, New York CityWritten by Richard Schechner and Saviana Stanescu, the play portrays Yokasta, mother of Oedipus, at four different ages, each Yokasta performed by a different actress. There is the classical Yokasta who rejects the idea that she committed suicide. The Yokasta who is forced by Laius to abandon her son. The “perfect Yokasta,” the woman who accepts the young man who killed Laius and who rules Thebes with him during decades of happy years. And, finally, the child Yokasta, too young to experience yet anything that will come — a girl who plays with space-age dolls and imagines a different future for herself.
