Faust/Gastronome

Composed by Schechner drawing on Marlowe’s Dr Faustus, Goethe’s Faust, and his own imagination. The great alchemist Faust, imagined as a chef, a master of recipes (alchemy by another name) who conjures up Mephistopheles, the woman devil with an erect penis tail. Together they journey the world, making trouble, money, love, and adventure. Faust the industrialist supports the Nazi war effort and profits from it. Finally, Faust’s contract with the devil comes due, and he is cooked in a giant pot in his own kitchen.
